Arizonans Continue Trends Toward Legalization
Marijuana support tied closely to Senate Preference
PHOENIX (December 16th, 2019) – Support for marijuana legalization remains steady in the newest edition of the Arizona Public Opinion Poll (AZPOP) – with 51 percent of likely voters in Arizona supporting the idea while 42 percent oppose it. As one might expect, there is a significant overlap in voter’s opinions on marijuana legalization and who they are supporting in the U.S. Senate race. Mark Kelly supporters favor marijuana legalization by more than a 3:1 margin, whereas McSally supporters oppose legalization almost 2:1.
“Legalization is likely to be on the ballot in Arizona, which is currently a battleground state, that may factor into the outcome of the highly-competitive Arizona Senate race,” said Mike Noble, Chief of Research and Managing Partner of Phoenix-based research company OH Predictive Insights.
There is some overlap between how the candidates’ supporters view marijuana. Almost 1 in 4 likely voters who said that they would support Mark Kelly over Martha McSally in the Senate race do not think that marijuana should be legalized for adult use. On the other hand, one-third of Martha McSally voters are supportive of the ballot measure.
Another positive sign for supporters of legalization is that respondents who say that they are “Extremely Enthusiastic” about voting in the 2020 election are 11-points more likely to support marijuana legalization.
“It’s always a good thing to have the support of enthusiastic voters this far out from election day, but watch to see if these numbers shift once opponents of the measure start spending significant amounts of money as election day draws closer,” says OHPI data analyst Jacob Joss.

Methodology: This blended phone poll was conducted via cell and landline. The survey was completed by OH Predictive Insights between December 3rd, 2019 and December 4th, 2019, from an Arizona likely 2020 General Election voter sample. The sample demographics accurately reflected party affiliation, gender, region, and age. The sample size was 628 completed surveys, with a MoE of ± 3.91%. Numbers may not total 100%, due to rounding.
