Tip Tax Trouble for Harris: Trump Tips the Scale

Nevada Voters Favor Tip Tax Ban in Latest Poll

PHOENIX (October 3, 2024)- According to recent public opinion polling data from Noble Predictive Insights’ (NPI) latest Nevada Public Opinion Pulse (NVPOP), Donald Trump holds a slight advantage over Kamala Harris on the issue of banning taxes on tips in Nevada.

This NVPOP, conducted from September 9–16, 2024, surveyed 812 registered voters in Nevada, yielding a margin of error of ± 3.44%.

In the debate over taxing tips, both Trump and Harris have aligned in their positions, pledging to eliminate taxes on tips. However, Trump holds a slight edge with voters on this issue – 47% of voters trust Trump on this issue compared to Harris’s 40%.

“While both candidates have taken similar stances on this issue, Trump’s slight lead likely stems from the Republican Party’s long-standing reputation for supporting tax cuts. This historical association seems to be resonating with voters, even in a case where both candidates are proposing similar policies,” said Mike Noble, NPI Founder & CEO.

Impact on Voter Behavior

The State of Nevada has the highest concentration of tipped workers in the nation, by far – more than twice the national average. Tip-related issues are especially impactful to Nevadans, and this poll finds that the major presidential candidates’ stances to support legislation banning tax on tips makes 47% of Nevada voters more likely to vote this November – 29% who would be “much more likely.”

Eliminating taxes on tips brings some disparate groups together. Republicans align with younger voters, Hispanic/Latinos, and urban voters as the groups made more likely to vote by Trump and Harris’ tip tax stance. Meanwhile, the voting plans of older voters, Independents, White voters, and those with higher incomes remain unaffected by this issue.

“What we're seeing here is a microcosm of the larger economic debate playing out in Nevada. The tip tax issue touches on broader themes of worker rights, tax policy, and economic fairness. How the candidates navigate this issue could provide valuable insights into their overall economic strategies and their ability to connect with working-class voters,” said David Byler, NPI Chief of Research.
